Improving sleep
Global public health concern over poor sleep has increased the demand for effective sleep promotion strategies that are easily accessible to people. Chronic insomnia with a sustained pattern of poor sleep can have health and safety consequences. Unaddressed insomnia is associated with daytime fatigue and sleepiness, cognitive impairment, poor mood, as well as physiological health issues such as injuries illness involving pain, and cardiometabolic disease. Although sleeping pills are commonly prescribed for insomnia, they are associated with multiple risks, including mortality, infections, “sleep driving,” and falling and are therefore not recommended for chronic management of insomnia. Behavioral strategies are considered superior ways for improving sleep.
